A Scarborough nursing home is benefitting from an energy boost after a new heating system was installed.

Rambla Nursing Home – part of the Complete Care Homes Group – was struggling to manage escalating bills while its 30 residents complained that it was either too hot or too cold.

Maintenance manager Ken Harrison contacted Sime looking for a complete overhaul following an examination of the existing technology.

The home had previously  been managing with storage heaters alone making the building expensive to heat and creating an inconsistency in temperature.

Sime installer Tony Buglass suggested a Murelle Equipe HE 70kW which was installed between June 2018 and September 2018.

The three-month fitting process allowed residents to remain in-situ throughout and there was minimum disruption to their daily routines.

The job included removing the old system and installing a gas heating and hot water solution from scratch.

This involved new pipework and fittings, 50 new radiators with energy efficient thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), the new Murelle Equipe HE 70 kW boiler and fitting four heating controls.

Tony’s design allowed temperature variations throughout the building by dividing the home into four heating zones – with controls in each zone to boost or reduce heating as and when required.

The result has been considerable savings on heating bills. In fact, as a result of the new energy-efficient gas heating and hot water system, the costs of running the facility have halved.

Tony said: “The new heating system has been designed to ensure maximum energy efficiency while ensuring better temperature regulation for the different areas of the building.  The 70 kW Sime Murelle Equipe ErP was the natural choice for me as it is energy efficient and delivers great outputs at a cost-effective price for a care home of this size.

Ken Harrison said the introduction of the boiler system had transformed life for the residents of the care home.

He said: “The storage heaters we had previously were functional, but were not really suitable for the purpose and size of the building.  We needed a more efficient gas heating system that allowed for greater flexibility of temperature control.  Such a change was a big undertaking for us and it was imperative that the installation of the new heating system did not disrupt our residents.   Tony did a fantastic job of minimising any inconvenience to them by completing the installation in carefully managed stages.  We are delighted with the new heating system and I am confident that it will deliver savings to our energy bills in the long-term.

Sime domestic and commercial boilers deliver intelligent and environmentally-efficient heating and hot water solutions.

With a proven reputation for quality, reliability and performance, Sime incorporates the stylish design and innovative engineering, synonymous with its Italian heritage.

All of its Murelle Equipe modular systems are equipped with 35, 50, 70 or 110kW condenser coil exchangers, characterised by high yield.

The combustion of methane generates water vapour, which in traditional boilers is conveyed to the outside through the release of heat from the chimney.

The technology used in Murelle Equipe modular systems allows for the recovery of this heat with the main exchanger constructed of stainless steel, which resists the corrosive action of the condensate.

Its cylindrical shape ensures the best possible heat exchange and collection of condensate.
